One of the shelters MARS works with on a regular basis recently received 54 dogs that were seized from a hoarder home.   MARS has committed to taking 18 of these precious lives in order to give them a second chance.

Zimerick- aka #12 - is a bit shy to start.  Give him some time and lovin' and he'll be a wonderful companion.

Notes from sending shelter:
So far some of them have tested positive for Demodectic mange (non-contagious mange) have started treatment for it and had several baths with special shampoo -- also they are being treated for eye infections.

The sores on their legs and paws are from laying and walking in all the feces and urine that was never cleaned up. The dogs that were locked in crates had it running out of the fronts of them from the doors-- the floors literally had 3 to 4" of feces and urine on it and the stench was unbearable -- the law enforcement had to use gas masks with oxygen attached to go in and retrieve the dogs out to us to crate up for transport.

There were tornup couches and chairs the dogs could jump up on to get out of the stuff on the floor but they to were covered in feces and wet urine from where the dogs would get up there and lay to get out of it.

None of these 54 dogs have ever been outside and never been on a leash-- they were locked in the downstairs basement of a home that was a finished basement and only had little to no human contact except for the single lady that lived there with them.

They has been easy for us to handle a little skittish and scared at first with all the change they have been through the past week, but over all nice little dogs and most are under 20#.

The one and only thing that  she did was feed these dogs and keep water buckets down because none of them are severely underweight.

UPDATE ON ZIMERICK:

Zimmy, as we call him, is a total puppy at heart  - He is such a clown and makes us laugh!  He's recently discovered the stash of stuffed toys but before that, he insisted on hauling around this light blue pillow (see picture).  He put a few holes in it even but we couldn't possibly get mad because of how hilarious it all was!  He even tried to stuff 3 different pillows into his crate (see picture).

As a result of the situation he came from, he will need a little training and guidance.  We are working on potty training and leash walking.  He sometimes thinks that the coffee table is the perfect platform to get from the couch to the chair  :)    He is crate trained at this time.

He would really do best in a home with another dog who is playful or at least mature and calm and who can show him the ropes.  His best friend at our home is Ollie (also from the same hoarding house & is up for adoption).  As his confidence and training progresses, he will likely feel more secure on his own but for now, he really stays with the pack and sleeps right by Ollie.

He is such an adorable, fun pup who will be an amazing dog some day!

Update:
Zimmy has definitely come a long way since we first got him.  He was like a feral dog at first!  He wouldn’t let us touch him, he flipped out on a leash, he shredded our kitchen blinds, and he pretty much had no use for humans.  Quite understandable based on where he came from.

Now we’re proud to say he’s crate trained, going with us on walks, he’s learning the command sit, and he’s much more affectionate and trusting of us – even letting us pet his belly sometimes!  We will be introducing him to more and more people in the weeks to come so he learns that only good things come from strangers!

We’ve bought some large stuffed animals and are transitioning him away from grabbing couch pillows!

He LOVES the other dogs in his foster home, except the tiny one who tries to bully him  :-)  He pals around with the rest of them, sleeps right next to or ON them, and tries to get them to play with him!  For this reason, he would make an excellent playmate for another dog!

He’s such a cute pup and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching him come out of his shell!

*The pet you are viewing is a rescued pet which is most often from an animal control facility and does not come with a pedigree. The breed(s) listed are our best guess and are in no way guaranteed. Sometimes the pets appear to be a particular breed(s) in the pictures we receive from our rescue partners and when they arrive we are surprised to see an entirely different breed(s) in person!  If you choose to DNA test your adopted pet, test results may vary from company to company and our breed guess may not be reflected in those results as it is just that, our best guess. It is with deep longing that we wish there was a breed called "cute" as we believe all of our dogs would fall under this new breed classification!

Completion of an Adoption Application via our website www.midwestanimalrescue.org is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is the first step in our adoption process.

*Animals who are not fully vaccinated and altered are not eligible for long distance adoption.

When you adopt a pet from Midwest Animal Rescue and Services, your adoption fee covers: Microchip and registration, Core Vaccines including Rabies, Distemper and bordetella, age appropriate heartworm testing or FeLV-FIV testing, sterilization, heartworm/flea-tick prevention and deworming while in foster care.

Adoption fees are non-negotiable and can be paid by cashier's check, money order or credit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Any issues that arise after adoption are the full responsibility of the adopter after the finalization of adoption. Adoption fees are only part of the expense of owning a pet, so we ask you to consider the costs for the life of the pet before adoption. We recommend pet insurance.
